Radar Reflectors

Postby altura20 » Tue Sep 09, 2008 11:27 am

Colin has remarked in this forum on the excellent radar return he noticed from two junk rigged boats; and one wonders whether, if indeed the fully battened junk sail, is responsible for the improvement whether the advantage is lost if for example you were motoring with the sail down.
Nevertheless, I've purchased a secondhand Firdell Blipper; but there doesn't seem to be sufficient space at the masthead and above the main halliard to fit it.
I've tried sailing with a conventional octahedral reflector hoisted on the burgee halliard but didn't like it clanking around up there and the possibility of its chafing the halliards.
What do other junkies do?

Better late than never. I hadn't spotted the radar reflector before in the picture of Rabbit. I've now mounted mine on the wind generator mast. Admittedly that is only some 3m above the waterline rather than the recommended 4m; but I also have the Sea Me active system.
On a recent cross channel passage I was most impressed with the NASA AIS Radar which Tony Foister (K30, DYTISCUS IV) had recommended. It took all the anguish out of crossing the shipping lanes.
